The Methodist Church Ghana has launched its 190th anniversary celebrations, marking nearly two centuries of service to God and contributions to Ghana’s development. The festivities, which began in January, will culminate in August 2025 with a grand thanksgiving service.
Key objectives of the celebration include reigniting Methodist heritage among the youth, showcasing the Church’s social impact, and reinforcing its mission to spread the Gospel. Activities planned include worship sessions, singing festivals, processions, and community outreach programs.
The launch was held at the Bethany Society, Dzorwulu Circuit, on Covenant Sunday, a day when Methodists renew their spiritual commitments. Presiding Bishop Most Rev Prof Johnson Kwabena Asamoah-Gyadu highlighted the Church’s significant contributions to Ghana’s spiritual and socio-economic growth since its establishment in 1835. “Our motto, ‘Thy Kingdom Come,’ will remain central to this celebration as we reflect on our journey and prepare for the future,” he stated.
In his address, the Bishop emphasized the Church’s role in nation-building through investments in education, health, and social services. He noted that Methodist-founded institutions have shaped countless lives, underscoring the Church’s enduring influence on Ghana’s development. The anniversary is seen as an opportunity to renew commitments to these sectors and expand outreach to underserved communities.
The planning committee, chaired by Rt Rev Samuel Kofi Osabutey, encouraged members to contribute their full support to the celebration. The anniversary, they said, is not only a moment of reflection but also a call to action for Methodists to continue the legacy of their forebears by embracing new ways to serve God and society effectively.
