Former President John Mahama has revealed that his journey into politics was not one he initially desired, but rather a path divinely orchestrated by God.
Speaking to a congregation at the Cedar Mountain Chapel of Assemblies of God in East Legon, Accra, on Sunday, Mahama shared how his early reluctance to enter politics was shaped by the traumatic experiences of his late father, Emmanuel Adama Mahama, who served as a Minister under Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Following the overthrow of Dr. Nkrumah’s government, Mahama’s father was imprisoned for two years, an experience that left him deeply scarred and disillusioned with politics. “My father never wanted to have anything to do with politics after that.
He went into business and became a successful rice farmer,” Mahama recounted. “Because of his stories about the trauma he endured, I told myself I would never go into politics. But God said, ‘Who are you to decide? I will do with you what I want.’ And here I am today.”
The former President emphasized that his political career was not a result of his own ambitions but a divine calling. “At every stage, I was reluctant to follow this path, but God kept pushing me in the direction He wanted me to go,” he said.
Reflecting on his childhood, Mahama shared that he never aspired to high-profile careers like law or medicine. Instead, he dreamed of simpler roles, such as becoming a fireman or a State Transport Company driver, inspired by their uniforms and the allure of driving long distances.
Mahama’s visit to the Cedar Mountain Chapel was marked by warm reception and prayers led by Reverend Stephen Wengam, General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana.
Rev. Wengam commended Mahama and his wife, Lordina, for their unwavering support during the construction of the church, describing the former President as the church’s “First Fruit President.” He also highlighted the pride of the Assemblies of God community in having four Ghanaian Presidents as part of their fellowship.
As the service concluded, Rev. Wengam and a team of pastors offered prayers for Mahama, asking for God’s guidance and blessings in his future endeavors. The former President’s testimony served as a powerful reminder of faith, surrender, and the belief that God’s plans often surpass human understanding.
Mahama’s story resonated deeply with the congregation, inspiring many to trust in God’s direction, even when it leads down unexpected paths.
