President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to adopt the principles of hard work, humility, and stewardship championed by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) to drive the country’s development forward. Speaking at the Bicentennial Anniversary Launch and Service of the PCG, the President highlighted the transformative impact of these values, which have been the cornerstone of the church’s 196 years of existence in Ghana.
He commended the Presbyterian Church for standing as a beacon of righteousness and justice, noting that these principles, when imbibed by citizens, could foster the transformation Ghana needs to achieve sustainable growth. “Proverbs chapter 14 verse 34 reminds us that righteousness exalts a nation, but sin condemns any people. It is this pursuit of righteousness that must continue to drive us individually and collectively as a nation,” the President remarked.
The event, themed “PCG @ 200: Celebrating God’s Faithfulness and Impacting Generations through the Gospel,” saw the President acknowledge the church’s invaluable contributions to Ghana’s education, healthcare, and social justice. He praised the establishment of institutions such as Presbyterian Boys Senior High School and Aburi Girls Senior High School, which have played critical roles in nurturing responsible citizens.
President Akufo-Addo further emphasized the importance of faith in governance, stating that he often draws inspiration and wisdom from the Word of God. He called on all Ghanaians to pursue a path of moral excellence to foster national progress.
In his sermon, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, Moderator of the General Assembly of the PCG, reaffirmed the church’s commitment to promoting Christian values and practices. He noted that the Presbyterian Church has been a blessing to Ghana in areas such as health, education, and agriculture and has firmly upheld its moral standards since introducing the Christian faith to the country.
The Moderator also urged President Akufo-Addo to assent to the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, following the Supreme Court’s dismissal of suits against the legislation. He emphasized the church’s unwavering stance on morality and its mission to remain a guiding light for the nation.
To support the upcoming Bicentennial Anniversary celebration in 2028, President Akufo-Addo donated GH¢ 50,000. A commemorative anniversary cloth was also unveiled for Presbyterians across the country to patronize, symbolizing the unity and legacy of the church as it continues its impactful journey.
