President-Elect Mahama Pledges Honest Leadership, Receiving Support from Assemblies of God Church.

The Assemblies of God Church has assured President-elect John Dramani Mahama of its firm backing as he prepares to lead Ghana. The assurance came during a courtesy visit to Accra on Tuesday by the church’s leadership, led by General Superintendent Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam.

Mr. Mahama, who was declared winner of Saturday’s elections by the Electoral Commission, was accompanied by his wife, Lordina Mahama, former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, and senior aide Joyce Bawa Mogtari during the meeting.

Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Mahama thanked the church for its consistent support and spiritual guidance throughout his political journey. He committed to leading the nation with honesty and integrity, emphasizing the need for collective effort to address Ghana’s current economic challenges.

“This is the time we are going to need prayers the most because Ghanaians have high expectations. The economy is in a severe crisis, and it will take hard work to restore it. We trust that the church will continue to pray for us,” he said.

Mr. Mahama also addressed the “Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill,” which was passed by Parliament earlier this year. He expressed hope that outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would sign the bill into law before the current parliament’s term ends.

“The issue of LGBTQ is still pending. It is our hope that this president will sign the bill,” he stated.

The bill, which seeks to increase criminal penalties for same-sex conduct and prohibits advocacy for LGBTQ rights, will lapse with the current parliament if it is not signed into law.

During the meeting, Rev. Wengam prayed for the President-elect, his family, and his team. He also presented Mr. Mahama with a Bible to serve as a guiding tool in his leadership decisions.
